This Assignment assesses the following module Learning Outcomes (Take these from the module DMD):

LO1: Explain safe working practices on construction sites, key health and safety legislation and safety in design;

LO2: Express the principles and process of sustainability and sustainable engineering design with reference to construction;

LO3: Discuss the economic, social and commercial context within which infrastructure is designed, developed, constructed, operated and decommissioned;

LO4: Identify safe and unsafe working practices and understand the role of key safety legislation;

LO5: Devise design options, sketch and present potential solutions to engineering problems in teams;

LO6: Use common project management tools and techniques;

LO7: Produce and interpret engineering drawings in accordance with accepted standards, conventions and practices.

4ENT1137 Principles of Sustainable Design & Construction Assignment Brief:

A series of hand drawn sketches, programme, risk assessment and written report based on a new structure covering the MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) adjacent to the Oval on the College Lane Campus, see attached location plan. You are tasked to design an innovative structure that is fit for
purpose and provides an all-weather use of the MUGA. The assignment will comprise:

A. Engineering Drawing

Hand drawn sketches to appropriate scales of:

  • One A3 drawing showing the plan view, front and side elevations of the new structure;
  • One A3 drawing showing an engineering detail of an element of the new structure;
  • One A3 drawing depicting a site plan of the new structure in relation to the existing infrastructure.

B. Project Management

Produce a design stage Gantt chart on one A3 sheet for your design including the following:

  • Suitable tasks, durations, links, timescale and bar chart view;
  • Logical duration, realistic and following industry techniques.

C. Health and Safety

Produce a design stage risk assessment on one A3 sheet for your design including the following:

  • Activities, hazards, who might be harmed and how, control measures in place and residual risks.

D. Sustainability and Design

Produce a report detailing your design including the following:

  • Details, with references, of how your design complies with current Health and Safety legislation including any safe working practices that will be adopted during the construction phase;
  • Your material choices and construction method for each element of the structure with robust justifications for the choice which specifically discusses sustainability. Provide evidence (fully referenced) of real-life examples that have informed your design choice;
  • The economic, social and commercial benefits for the structure throughout its lifecycle.

This assignment is worth 50% of the overall assessment for this module..
