Case Study and Tasks
This is an individual assignment that has several sections contained within one report and appended evidence – a portfolio. (6000 words maximum). You will need to fully apply aspects known about the project and apply modern methods of strategic construction project management in order to answer this brief. The work must demonstrate engagement with academic debate and justification for assumptions and conclusions reached.

Project Background
The owners of a private educational institution – a technical college with a focus on IT and Technology has acquired a 12 acre brownfield site on the outskirts of a large town in your Country. They have a vision for the creation of a secondary school and a higher education facility that incorporates all levels through secondary and further education and culminate with higher education teaching research and awards to PhD
level.

They have had some concept work done by architects that suggests that, for many reasons including legal, they need to create separate projects to accommodate the secondary school equivalent for ages 11 to 18 and that the 18 plus building should accommodate both further and higher education facilities. The combined college site will give opportunities for sharing of infrastructure, specialist and support facilities together with support from the local council who have included this in their 10 year
vision and proposed nearby plans for new residential, leisure and commercial sites together with transport changes such as rerouting of busses, metro stops and car parks.

The college owners are keen to include the latest technology and environmental considerations within the projects as they plan for their business into the middle of the century. They have a vision that includes two large buildings with targets of 1500
student for the secondary and 2500 students for the tertiary colleges. Facilities for general and specialist spaces need to be included at each level. There needs to be consideration for combined staff and support/administration areas. Their requirements for infrastructure include play and sports areas, a sports hall and swimming pool, underground car parks for staff and visitors and parking for parents.
They need hard and soft landscaping, lighting, security.

The buildings and infrastructure must comply with standards that provide a zero carbon and nitrogen footprint whilst being artistic and attractive. As the business has a technology and IT focus, the projects must also incorporate the latest technologies with vision and capacity for the future.

Following an expression of interest application by your company, the client has asked for a paper and presentation based on the scenario above. Based on the initial vision of the client you have been asked to write an initial report advising the client on

1.Master-planning or programme management with regard to managing multiple projects in order to achieve strategic objectives (2000 words or equivalent)(40%)
2.The role and appointment of a professional advisory team, management of the stakeholder team and the client and a critical evaluation of the role of a strategic project manager (client-side) in the context of the complex
construction projects. (4000 words or equivalent) (60%)

The focus of this module is on the strategic management of projects. In this case, the feasibility project (pre-contract) that leads to a master plan of phased delivery of construction projects within the context of the business of the client.
