Detailed Brief for Individual/Group Assessment :

Assignment Title: Designing an HRM Research project

Introduction :
Your task for this assignment is to produce an Individual REPORT setting out the design of a research project that seeks to address an HR issue or question of relevance to organisations today (such as skill shortages, the impact of Brexit or Covid, employee engagement or talent management issues, communication problems etc) in the context of an organisation of your choice.

The issue/question needs to therefore be worthy of the time the organisation and you will invest, so it needs to of significance. To establish whether the project is significant you will need to review the literature to help establish a “gap” and clarify the organisations need.  Explain why your work is important, so a short justification for why your research is original and how it adds something new to the field of study and to the organisation. You will make the design and justification of the research process explicit so a reader can follow the rationale for the project (Introduction and literature) and how/why you will explore the project (Method).

Assignment brief :
Select an HRM issue of interest to you and to an organisation of your choice. The assignment is the design of an empirical research project to answer a significant HRM related question linked to the area. The research design provides a detailed plan of a research project before you plan to undertake. It will demonstrate your knowledge of the
subject area and explain and justify the research approach and methods you want to use to complete your research.

The design should set out the central research question/ aims and questions that will guide your research. You may also be using propositions or hypotheses depending on the nature of the research aim/question.

The design should demonstrate the originality of your intended research. You should therefore explain why your research is important (for example, by explaining how your research builds on and adds to the current state of knowledge).

Further details/Instruction :
The following sections will need to be included in the project design (assignment):

Working title of the research – Word limit: 1 sentence

An initial idea of the title should be given – this is likely to be revised as the research progresses and can therefore be a tentative suggestion

The context and background of the HRM research topic / issue, as well as the rationale for undertaking the research, should be outlined in the introduction section. Reference to key literature should be included to strengthen the rationale for conducting the research.

You should explain the broad background against which you will conduct your research. You should include a brief overview of the general area of study within which your proposed research falls, summarising the current state of knowledge and recent debates on the topic. This will allow you to demonstrate a familiarity with the relevant
field as well as the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

This will enable the reader to understand what the research will be about and why it is important and end of a clear research question(RQ) or you may stating an  Aim. You might find it helpful to prioritize one or two main questions, from which you can then derive a number of secondary research questions, or an aim and some linked objectives. You may be using propositions or hypotheses depending on the nature of the research aim/question.

Overall, whatever terminology is used you need to ensure your research and the aim is focused. The Aim/RQ should be formulated clearly, giving an explanation as to what problems and issues are to be explored and why they are worth exploring

Literature review :
This should expand on the key literature referred and related to the issue discussed in the introduction. The review of the literature will need to go further than listing individual studies or theories. You will need to demonstrate an awareness of the current state of knowledge and an understanding of key lines of argument and debates on the topic / issue. You will show why your project is worthwhile and addresses a gap in the knowledge in the area.

The literature will need to be critically analysed and evaluated rather than just described. This means demonstrating how studies, arguments and debates are linked and how the existing body of research links to your own research area / issue.

It should also focus on the theoretical and practical knowledge gaps that your work aims to address, as this ultimately justifies and provides the motivation for your project. The literature will justify and develop your introduction and re state and end with your research question – it will lead to and justify the RQ/Aim, ie explain the significance of research – include a reference list at the end of the assignment as per conventions.
