What am I required to do in this assignment?

You will carry out two practicals:
1. In the first session you will carry out digestion of lambda DNA by using restriction enzymes to produce a restriction map for lambda DNA.
2.In the second session you will perform a PCR followed by Agarose gel electrophoresis.

In this assignment you are required to submit a portfolio of two reports; one for each practical. Each report will describe and analyse the data obtained during the lab practical and will communicate the results of the experimental studies.

• Demonstrate understanding of relevant laboratory molecular biology techniques in the practical and/or report.

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?
You are required to submit a portfolio of two reports; one for each practical.
Each lab report should contain four sections: Introduction, Results, Discussion and References. A Methods section should not be included.Each section should be clearly labeled. Clarity of English language and presentation is essential throughout.

Introduction:
This section should typically represent approximately 35% of the length of your report. It should summarise the published background literature relevant to this study. It must explain what your experimental study is about, and place it in context of the previously published literature. It should also state the scientific aim of the study.

Results:
This section should typically represent approximately 30% of the length of your report. Data may be presented in tables, graphs,diagrams, or photographs as appropriate for your particular experimental study. Figures and tables should be separately numbered, and be clearly labeled. You should include written text to explain what your findings are and what is shown in the figures and tables. Results should describe your findings/observations, but not interpret their meaning.

Discussion: This section should typically represent approximately 35% of the length of your report. In the discussion you should interpret your results, explaining what they indicate. You should compare your findings to previously published findings and should place your results in the context of published scientific literature.

The results and discussion must address the points raised in your protocol (1-4 for PCR, 1-7 for RE digestion).

References:
You should include at least five peer-reviewed scientific journal articles or textbooks as sources for each part of the lab report.These should be listed in correct Uo B format in a single reference list.

The completed lab report should have a top page giving your student number, unit code and assessment number, and the word count of your report (excluding references). It should be submitted electronically on BREO. Failure to submit your report by the submission deadline indicated in this assessment brief, will result in a G/0 grade.

Support for this assessment is given through the briefing before the start of the practical, which will outline what will be done during the practical. A background / briefing document as well as additional supporting information, will be available through BREO. A tutorial session will provide specific guidance on data analysis and report write-up.
