Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight self starvation and an extreme preoccupation with body weight and shape.

Individuals with this condition often have a distorted body image and see themselves as over weight even dangerously thin Silén and Keski- Rahkonen 2022). Anorexia nervosa is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that requires professional treatment.

It is estimated that between 0.5-1 percent of children in the Western world suffer from anorexia nervosa (AN) Silén and Keski Rahkonen 2022 a potentially life threatening eating dis order characterized by severe restriction of food in take an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image.

Despite its high prevalence the disorder is often not identified until it reaches an advanced stage at which point treatment becomes more difficult. A growing body of evidence suggests that early identification of anorexia and intervention can improve outcomes.

How ever health care professionals and the general public still lack knowledge about the signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa, which can make it difficult to identify the disorder early.

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of early identification of anorexia nervosa and to develop intervention strategies for children and adolescents with the disorder and their families. This research will help improve our under standing of identifying and supporting children with the condition and their carers.

I chose this topic because I am passionate about helping children and young people who are suffering from mental health issues. Anorexia Nervosa is a serious and potentially life-threatening eating dis order that affects children and young people in the UK.

As a practitioner in early years I believe that it is important to identify and intervene early with children who are showing signs of AN in order to provide them with the best possible chance of recovery. Early intervention is also imperative for the families of children with AN as they need support and guidance to understand the condition and to help them to cope with the difficulties they may face.

This topic is vital to early years settings as it high lights the need for practitioners to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa in order to identify any children who may be at risk. It is also imperative to understand the strategies and interventions that can be used to support children with AN and their families in order to provide them with the best possible chance of recovery.

This can help to ensure that all children in the early years setting feel safe secure and supported and can help to create a positive learning environment for all.

This study investigates the outcomes of early identification and intervention strategies for children with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and their carers. The specific objectives are to:

2. Identify the signs and symptoms of AN in children.
3. Investigate the intervention strategies of anorexia in children and their carers.
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention strategies in reducing the risk of AN in children.

This literature review will focus on early identification of anorexia nervosa (AN) in children and effective intervention strategies for them and their carers.

The focus of this review is to identify existing research and evidence based practice regarding the early identification of AN in children and the effectiveness of intervention strategies for them and their carers to support their recovery. A search of the literature was conducted using the databases CINAHL Plus PubMe PsycINFO and Google Scholar.

Search terms used included anorexia nervosa children early identification and intervention strategies. This search yielded a total of 28 articles relevant to this review.

Signs and symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa in children

AN is a serious and potentially life-threatening eating disorder characterised by an intense fear of gaining weight self-imposed starvation and an abnormally low body weight Nicula et al., 2022). Anorexia Nervosa typically begins during adolescence but can also affect younger children.

Relationship between early identification of Anorexia Nervosa and improved wellbeing of children

Early identification of Anorexia Nervosa can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of children and their carers.

Early intervention can help to reduce the severity of the disorder and lessen the impact on both the child and their carers Herpertz-Dahlmann and Dahmen 2019.

Further more it can provide carers with a better under standing of the disorder and help them to provide appropriate care and support for the child.

The qualitative data will be collected using a case study approach with semi structured in depth interviews and focus groups conducted with a small number of children with anorexia and their carers (McLeod, 2019). The research paradigm that can go with a qualitative approach is an interpretive paradigm. The interpretive paradigm is based on the idea that knowledge is socially constructed and that the researcher should strive to understand and interpret the meanings and experiences of individuals with in their contexts (Rehman and Alharthi, 2016).

This approach emphasizes the importance of exploring the lived experiences of those affected by anorexia nervosa and their carers as well as the factors that increase the risk of the disorder in children.
