Assignment Type : Assignment Essay
Word Count : 1500 to 2000 words,
Introduction To Materials Engineering Assignment – UK.
Part A Phase Diagrams and Crystal Structure :
1.Describe and discuss the information presented in phase diagrams. Include one or more diagrams to illustrate your answer. You should explain what a phase is (you can focus on phase diagrams for metal alloys), include concepts of solid solutions and solubility limit, demonstrate the use of the lever rule to determine proportions of phases present for a given temperature and composition, and include reference to crystal structures and micro structure changes arising from temperature and/or composition changes.
2) Aluminium alloys can be strengthened by precipitation hardening. Explain with the use of a suitable phase diagram the process for precipitation hardening, outlining the solubility requirements of such an alloy to allow precipitation
hardening, and explaining how precipitates act to increase the strength.
Part B Choose one of the 3 topics below and discuss the important aspects as directed.
Either
1) Corrosion in metals – explain the mechanisms for corrosion in metals, how the ‘environment’ can affect the corrosion rate and how corrosion can be controlled or prevented (design, materials, and/or treatments).

2) Magnetic properties of materials – identify the origins of magnetism in materials and explain why materials differ in their magnetic properties and how materials respond when exposed to a magnetic field. Include an overview
of Ferromagetism, Diamagnetism and Paramagnetism with reference to examples and explanation of material’s behaviour/response at the atomic scale when a magnetic field is applied. For a ferromagnetic material discuss the hysteresis behaviour (material response when magnetic field strength is changed).
3) Electrical properties of materials – identify the origins of electrical conduction in materials and the parameters that affect the electrical conductivity of a material. Include the key differences between conductors, insulators, and semi-conductors, briefly considering difference in conduction mechanism in ionic materials. Also describe the behaviour of free electrons, the concepts of electron mobility and electron drift velocity, and how temperature, impurities in
a crystal lattice and plastic deformation can influence the electrical conductivity (or resistivity).
Part C
Your answer should be a short essay, 1500 to 2000 words, on the following subject:
There are 4 major material classes: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers and Composites.
Choose two materials classes and compare and contrast
Introduction To Materials Engineering Assignment – UK.
1.Material Properties
2. Material processing and manufacturing routes
3.Applications for the materials
4. Other features of interest
You are advised to include tables, diagrams and references as appropriate. The lectures presented during the module should form guidance for your response BUT you will need to carry our further reading to provide a more complete answer.
