MA 01 guidance
Part 1:
Block 1 introduced you to two academic perspectives that aim to understand children and child hoods: childhood studies and child psychology. These two perspectives focus on different aspects of childhoods and ask different kinds of questions. Part 1 of this TMA asks you to identify and describe key aspects that each academic perspective focuses on. It also asks you to explain what you find interesting about them, using examples from the module materials.

Part 1 of TMA 01 builds towards the essay-writing skills that you will develop on E102. However, the task does not involve writing a formal academic essay, so an introduction and conclusion are not required. Please divide the 750-word count for this part into two sections of approximately 375 words each.
Writing style:
Part 1 of TMA 01 is a formal academic writing task. In most instances this means you should use an objective writing style and adopt the ‘third person’ approach rather than the first person (‘I’).However, note that when introducing aspects of childhood that you find interesting from the two academic perspectives, you may use ‘I’.
In Part 2, you will reflect on your own learning and development, and make claims about yourself, so it is appropriate to write in the first person (using ‘I’).
Guidance on objective writing, the first and third-person approaches, and how to apply these can be found on the Skills for OU Study Using an appropriate writing style web page.

Structuring your writing: Guidance on writing in paragraphs with some examples and support activity can be found on the Skills for OU Study Dividing your work into paragraphs web page.
Engaging with module materials:
This module requires that you show your understanding of module materials by describing and explaining key ideas in the E 102 Reader and online. This is a core requirement throughout this module – see the marking grid on the next screen.
When you do this, you should write in your own words. This means using few, short quotes; not using ‘close paraphrasing’ (very similar wordings) or the same sentence structure or order as in the course texts. You should reference your sources – that is, show where you found the information.
This module does not require you to use non-module sources for your TMAs, but if you do so, you must also write in your own words and reference these sources.

‘Referencing’ the sources of the ideas you present:
This is not a requirement for TMA 01, but in Block 2 you will learn to show which module materials you have used, by referencing the source of the ideas you describe and explain (in the E102 Reader, the online materials, or external sources).
