Background:
Traditional supply chains are about products flowing through a network of inventory nodes. The purpose of this assessment is to look at a non-traditional supply chain, the hydrogen supply chain. As sustainable development is becoming more and more important, more and more electricity production relies on renewable energy sources. Having a cheap and reliable source of green energy is key to achieving what is called ‘clean growth’. One of the key challenges of renewable energy sources is intermittence. For example, it is pointless to rely on wind energy for clean electricity if diesel backup generators have to be used when there is no wind! Hydrogen could be a solution to this challenge, as it is a potential medium to store electricity/energy.

Electricity networks are not traditional supply chains as aggregate electricity demand should be equal to aggregate electricity supply on a real time basis. Currently, this is achieved through a complex load balancing mechanism. If a renewable source of energy can produce electricity when there is no demand, this potential supply is lost. Hydrogen is important as it becomes possible to stock electricity, i.e. to introduce inventory nodes. In other words, hydrogen is a way to transform the electricity supply chain in a more traditional supply chain. There are of course many challenges
ahead. For example, electricity storage will come at an extra cost, but the most fundamental challenge is to design a supply chain from scratch, i.e. with no existing infrastructure. In a traditional supply chain, road networks already exist. In the hydrogen supply chain, we are looking at a blank canvas!

Extra information will be provided in tutorial sessions, but you may want to consider doing some extra research about the principles of clean growth and about the hydrogen economy.

Brief :
Your task is to show on a poster what a hydrogen supply chain could look like, but also to explore the economic feasibility of that supply chain. All concepts covered in the lectures and tutorials in the first 7 weeks of the module should be applied. The structure of your poster is free but it is recommended that you make sure that you cover the following points:
1.Provide a general introduction to the hydrogen economy.
2.Scoping of your poster. The hydrogen economy concept encompasses a multitude of different underlying supply chains and it would be impossible to complete this task in such a broad context. You need to scope down your poster to focus on a specific hydrogen supply chain. For that supply chain, provide at least one supply chain map. A supply
chain map should clearly show the end user and all the supply nodes, stock points, and transportation modes. Ideally, you will consider different possibilities (for example centralised vs. decentralised production, with and without storage) to address current research questions about the future hydrogen supply chains. You could also consider different degrees of vertical integration along the supply chain (make/buy).


3.Develop a cost framework. For your proposed supply chain(s), devise a cost framework to be used to assess economic feasibility. You should identify a non-hydrogen benchmark so that you have a clear criterion to assess whether or not your proposed supply chain is economically viable.


4.Populate your cost framework in Excel by using available data from sources that you will have to research. Make assumptions when needed, including assumptions about technology learning curves. Show detailed computations in Excel. Show the results in the poster and draw a conclusion about the viability of your supply chain(s).

5.Perform a risk analysis for your supply chain(s). This can be done by showing a risk register/log/assessment on the poster. Comment on the impact of this step, qualitatively speaking, on your conclusion of part 4.


6.Select at least one risk factor or an assumption that you think is critical. Select several if relevant. For these selected variables, using Excel, perform a sensitivity analysis of the cost of your supply chain(s). Show the results on the poster and comment on the impact of this step, quantitatively speaking, on your conclusion of part 4.
