QHO323 Introduction to Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Group Report

Assessment Task:
You should produce a 3,000-word GROUP report (+ relevant appendices as appropriate), outlining the following areas as a minimum:

 A description of the entrepreneur/s who started your chosen business,
including reflective comment on his/her/their current motivations and
behavioural characteristics and whether your observations of his/her/their
behaviour reflects the ‘norms’ of ‘typical’ entrepreneurial behaviour-sets

 Discussion of how he/she/they identified the original entrepreneurial idea
at the start-up/pre-start-up stage. Assessment as to whether they formally
researched and evaluated the business idea in detail before entering the
market, or whether they just ‘went for it’

 Comment on what he/she/they see as being unique and different about
their organisation and whether you perceive these differences as being
appropriate for the challenges faced by the organisation in today’s fast-
moving and competitive environment, and whether the organisation is
sustainable in this respect.

 Based on the theory, insights and observations that you have derived from
this module, you should provide 2-3 recommendations and rationale to the
entrepreneur as to what you would suggest should be done to ensure
sustainability of the organisation. The recommendations should be
consistent and appropriate to the organisation’s resources

 Based on the theory insights and observations that you have derived from
this module, you should provide recommendations and rationale as to what
the entrepreneur/s could do to ensure that the organisation develops (from
new) or enhances (an already existing) entrepreneurial culture.
Recommendations should be consistent and appropriate to the organisation’s resources and justified with appropriate reference to theory.
You might like to refer to local business support agencies and other business support providers if you feel that they would be of value to the
organisation.

You will need to draw from a range of academic theories, models and insights that you have studied and derived from your study of this module, using a good range of credible academic references.

IMPORTANT:
The idea of researching may seem daunting. Remember that the higher education environment requires a slightly different approach to learning than you may have experienced at further education level. Don’t expect your learning to be all one-way, from tutor to student. You will be expected to generate your own knowledge from a variety of sources: lectures, tutorial discussions with tutors and other students, independent reading / research, and work experience (if possible).

It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you review the PDF document – Group work Booklet on the SOL in week 3 seminar session. The document is entitled ‘Making group work work’. You should also use the ‘Group Contract Template’ (also on the same page on the SOL), to support your group work assessment and ensure that you are all high performing team members, that each take responsibility for completing the summative assessment.

For this group report students will be allocated one overall mark. It is intended that they should share the group grade, however, in exceptional circumstances, where it is clear that one or more member of the group is not contributing, the non-contributing member/s may receive an individual grade that reflects their contribution”.

Please refer to the ‘Making group work work booklet’ on the assessment tab for additional instructions relating to the operation of your group.

A suggested framework for your Group Report
Title
Contents
1.Introduction
Introduce the company and its background in a couple of paragraphs.

2.Account and Findings
This section will comprise the largest section of your report. You will need to draw from a range of academic theories, models and insights that you have studied and derived from your study of this module.

You should have undertaken appropriate research, in both breadth and depth, from credible academic sources.

You should demonstrate good application to learning by drawing from the range of academic theories and models studied on this module. You should review the content delivered each week and apply it in context to your chosen entrepreneur/company, i.e. relate the theory to your entrepreneur. You need to ‘pick out’ what is most relevant from the large body of knowledge open to you. This is not an easy skill to master or do, it does require careful thought.

Don’t tell me what I already know by taking a model, theory or a concept and tell me ‘all about it’. Tell me instead how the theory helps us understand the company in question (or not!). Simply give a brief description of how the model, theory or concept is commonly used (its ‘context’) and then immediately move on to discussing how knowledge/use application of it can help us understand the company and related issue in hand.

To aim for higher grades should do additional reading and research around the theories and models.

2.1. Entrepreneur/s behavioural and characteristics
A description of your chosen entrepreneur/s, including reflective comment on his/her/their current motivations and behavioural characteristics and whether your observations of his/her/their behaviour reflects the ‘norms’ of ‘typical’ entrepreneurial behaviour-sets from contemporary entrepreneurial theory.

2.2. Business model
Discussion of how he/she/they identified the original entrepreneurial idea at the start-up/pre-start-up stage. Assessment as to whether they formally researched and evaluated the business idea in detail before entering the market, or whether they just ‘went for it’

2.3. USP and sustainability
Comment on what he/she/they see as being unique and different about their organisation and whether you perceive these differences as being appropriate for the challenges faced by the organisation in today’s fast-moving and competitive environment, and whether the organisation is
sustainable in this respect (i.e., with respect to contemporary business pressures).

3.Conclusion and recommendations
Based on the theory, insights and observations that you have derived from this module, you should provide recommendations (can be relatively simple) and rationale as follows…

3.1. Sustainability of the organisation
Provide 2-3 recommendations and rationale, consistent and appropriate to the organisation’s resources, to the entrepreneur as to what you would suggest should be done to ensure sustainability of the organisation.

3.2. Staying entrepreneurial
Provide recommendations and rationale, consistent and appropriate to the organisation’s resources, as to what the entrepreneur/s could do to ensure that the organisation develops (from new) or enhances (an already existing) entrepreneurial culture. You might like to refer to local business support agency support providers if you feel that they would be of value to the organisation, or could discuss business support that the entrepreneur received at start-up.

3.3. Conclusion
Briefly tell the reader what you have reviewed and what you found. State how the recommendations identified would (in your opinion) help the company achieve entrepreneurial sustainability and identify any other benefits you feel are useful.

4.References
Using the Harvard Solent format

4.Appendix
Never leave data, graphs or tables in the appendix without stating the source. Remember the appendix does not get marked as such and does not count towards the word-count, but a good appendix is a good indicator of research efforts and general diligence, so it is worth spending time on.
