INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH PROMOTION

What is health promotion?

“enables people to increase control over their own health. It covers a wide range of social and environmental interventions that are designed to benefit and protect individual people’s health and quality of life by addressing and preventing the root causes of ill health, not just focusing on treatment and cure” (Rural health info, 2021).

HEALTH PROMOTION THEORIES TO CONSIDER FOR ASSIGNMENT
Selected theories and models that are used for health promotion and disease prevention programs include

  • Ecological Models
  • The Health Belief Model
  • Stages of Change Model (Transtheoretical Model)
  • Social Cognitive Theory
  • Theory of Reasoned Action/Planned Behavior

Transtheoretical Model (TTM) or stages of change model

◦developed by James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente
◦consists of 4 constructs which focuses on promoting behavior change by identifying how and why people change.
◦It also looks at a person’s readiness to adapt to a new behavior.
◦Stages of Change was tested, in-depth, with many different populations and addictive behaviors
◦It focuses on the decision making process and how individuals move from one stage to the next.

Stages of change model

1.Pre-contemplation
2.Contemplation
3.Preparation
4.Action
5.Maintenance

THE HEALTH BELIEF MODEL (HBM)

◦HBM theory explains health behaviour of by understanding people’s beliefs about health.
◦For example, interventions based on the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) are usually effective at increasing fruit and vegetable (FV) intake  (Carvalhoet al. 2021)

The likelihood of an individual taking action about a particular health issue is based of 4 types of belief:

1.they perceive themselves to be susceptible to a condition or problem
2.they believe it will have potentially serious consequences
3.they believe a course of action is available which will reduce their susceptibility/ minimize the consequences
4.they believe that benefits of taking action will outweigh the costs or barriers.
