Word Count : 1500
Weight : 70%

TASK :

Acting as an external management consultant, you are required to write a 1,500-word (MAXIMUM) report about Unilever.

The 1,500-word report must cover the following 3 sections:

1. Section 1: Using the information from the case study, and a wide range of relevant theory, identify and analyse the issues arising in Unilever.

To support your analysis, you MUST draw on and apply a minimum of FOUR theories from FOUR of the following topics – i.e., minimum one theory per topic – drawing from four different topics out of the following eight options (it is up to you to choose what four topics and then, what theories within the selected topics):

• Perception and communication (e.g., Impression Management, critical communication theories, etc.)
• Motivation, Performance & Reward (e.g., Herzberg’s theory, etc.)
• Organisational Structure (e.g., matrix, etc.)
• Organisational Culture (e.g., Schein’s, Hofstede’s frameworks, etc.)
• Change Management (e.g., Lewin’s models, etc.)
• Leadership & Management (e.g., transactional/transformational leadership, etc.)
• Sustainability (e.g., Stakeholder theory, etc.)
• Business ethics (e.g., deontology, utilitarianism, etc.)
The above examples of theories per topics are not exhaustive, this is just an example and it is your task to identify other applicable theories from these topics. (We usually cover several theories within a topic, so do revisit the lecture materials and the relevant book chapters to identify relevant theories to apply to this case.)

Please note, higher marks are likely to be awarded for those students who incorporate and apply additional frameworks from across the MAPIO syllabus.

2. Section 2: Based on your analysis in part 1. above, you should draw conclusions by identifying the key issues facing the company.

3. Section 3: Outline TWO recommendations to address the issues identified in your analysis and explain how these should be implemented. These should be based on your broader studies of the MAPIO topics. The recommendations must be presented as a table, with one column for recommendations and the objectives, a second column for your justification and a third column for the implementation. There is no requirement to include theory or references in the recommendations section.

This report should go beyond simple ‘identification’ of issues to include discussion of why
particular issues are significant and justification of the recommendations, as supported by
theory/research.

Work that is likely to fail: report that applies less than FOUR theories, and has less than FIVE different academic sources (academic textbook, academic e-book, academic journal,
professional journal).

In other words, to achieve a pass mark: you need to reference at least five academic sources and use at least four theories (from four different topics) in your case study report. This is because such work is unlikely to have sufficient depth/detail to pass the module.

Please note that you are expected to find your own sources for the analysis and not just cite the sources that are used in the case study. The sources in the case are there to provide the case context and you can just cite the case booklet (as detailed above) when referring to information from it about Unilever. If you want to cite the sources from the booklet, you can, but in addition to the sources cited in the case booklet, you need to find at least five other sources to reference for the analysis of the case.

• ANALYSIS (approx. 1200 words – e.g., 300 words per theory application/analysis) should include:
✓ Headings and sub-headings that are informative and based on the content of your analysis
(although do not get carried away with too many headings / sub-headings as these count
towards the overall word count for the report).
✓ Points grouped together so that readers can concentrate on one aspect at a time.
✓ Points and supporting evidence (e.g. in-text citations and references) needed to support
statements / discussion.
• CONCLUSION (approx. 150 words) should follow from the points made in your discussion /analysis and clearly identify the challenges / significant issues facing the organisation.
• RECOMMENDATIONS must be presented as a table, with one column for recommendations identifying a clear objective and outlining the purpose of each recommendation, a second column providing a justification for the recommendation and a third column for how the recommendation will be implemented. There is no requirement to include theory or references in the recommendations section. The recommendations in the table do not count towards the word count.
