The development of a concept analysis paper will provide the student with an opportunity to demonstrate an ability to identify and define a concept that is central to your chosen practice area. The student will demonstrate how their chosen concept is embedded in a theory which can/may be used as the framework for a research proposal.

A concept analysis is an exercise designed to make the student familiar with a concept. A concept is usually one or two words that convey meaning, understanding or feelings between or among individuals within the same discipline. A concept analysis is the first step in communicating meanings, understandings and feelings. A concept is usually measurable.
Preparing a concept analysis paper for nursing involves conducting a literature review, identifying the key characteristics or attributes of the concept, identifying its antecedents and consequences and applying them to a model case.
Primary sources should be used so that the student interprets original work for them-selves. Secondary sources may not be accurate or fail to present the case fully, but they are useful early reading to get a grasp of a concept.

Identify a concept within this specific area and outline the significance to nursing.
Identify the framework that you will use to guide your paper.
Conduct a literature review.
Describe how the search was undertaken – please attach search appendices.

Construct cases (model and contrary cases).
Describe the antecedents and consequences from the literature.
Define the empirical referents.
Describe a theoretical lens that fits your concept.
Discuss how your concept is embedded in the theory.
NOTE: It is recommended that literature used is current (5 years) so that it reflects the current state of knowledge – submitting out dated work (unless seminal or of historical significance) is not advised.
Presentation and Submission Guidelines for Concept Analysis
1. Please submit one electronic copy of your assignment to Turnitin on the Nursing Theory Blackboard Folder by 1200hrs (Midday) on 11th December, 2020.
2.The paper should be submitted in accordance with the Department of Nursing and Health Care Sciences assignment submission criteria. These are located on Blackboard within a sub folder in the Admin – Science: Nursing & Health Care folder. The subfolder is entitled: ‘Assignment and referencing guidelines’
3.Include the following with your paper: word processed Assignment Feedback Sheet, Declaration of Originality, and Title page. These should be placed at the beginning of the submission document. A typed name is adequate as a signature in The Declaration of Originality.
